It would be unfair, however, to censure with too great rigour the early teachers who contrived the first anglo-french Grammars; we should not forget that they were the pioneers of the profession. W'e ought to bear in mind that it is the lot of human nature to submit to the ordeal of experience, and that it is mostly to the errors and failures of our predecessors, that we are commonly indebted for the many udvan tages which we actually possess.
Neither should we be justified in supposing that success did not sometimes crown their professional labours; but, unfortunately for us, their modesty, as it appears, induced them to attribute such success to their written systems, rather than to their individual efforts, their active practical means; for the transmitted to us the for mer, while they neglected to make us acquainted with the latter.
