Excerpt from The Problem of the Cross
Atonement in the scheme of Christian theology. I have tried in these lectures to indicate the form which I think our interpretation of the Cross will take. We shall make central the thought that God suffers with His universe. One of the most urgent needs for theology at this moment is to think out the relation between the twin concep tions of Transcendence and Immanence. The Cross of Christ. Certainly Wins a new significance when set against the background of the divine immanence. But the Cross was no defeat, but a triumph. That is the cardinal message of Christianity. Hence the conception of a God who suffers with His world must be shown to be compatible with the conception of a God who in suffering is transcendently Victorious other wise the Cross spells weakness instead of power.
