The French language does not therefore possess ao cent, such as was understood by the ancients, and is now found in the English, Italian, Spanish languages, &c. Viz: a certain inflection of the voice, which makes in a word, one syllable more forcible than the others. In the English word accident, for instance, the accent is on the first syllable; it is on the second in imprudent, and on the third in continental. But these words, which have been selected, because they belong to both languages, have no accent in French, that is to say, no syllable more forcible than the others: the voice must there. Fore rest on the last syllable. Read the French words accident, imprudent, continental.
