The Iliad is divided into twenty-four books, severally named from the letters Of the Greek alphabet. This methodical division seems to have been made some time after the age of Homer, who sung his own Poetry in detached parts, probably without committing it to writing. The parts being subsequently connected in due order, the reciters of these were called pmbqidm (from pans: to sew together, and on, a song), and the poem itself was called pad/aided.
