Excerpt from A First German Reader: With Questions and Vocabulary
To make it available for use almost at the very beginning of the German course, only the present tense has been employed in the first twenty-one selections (with the exception of number eighteen) and difficult constructions have been consistently avoided. Transposed word order is not introduced until the pupil has had ample time to become acquainted with normal and inverted word order.
With the exception of the poems, the text is either original, or simplified to meet the needs of the beginner. The questions are intended to aid the pupil in the preparation of his lessons. Teachers may alter or amplify these questions as they see fit.
