L'inquisitioh prétendit prouver que ces révélations étaient l'oeuvre du démon, que le confes seur du roi était donc hérétique au premier chef; Mendoza 'le fit enfermer aux prisons secrètes de Murcie; on le mit à la question pour obtenir son aveu, mais on n'y réussit pas; le pauvre moine refuèa de se reconnaitrecoupable; les juges de Murcie et de Madrid ne trouvèrent pas matière même à une censure théologique; et la cour suprême ne rendit pas l'arrêt d'emprisonnement qu'on lui demandait. L'archevêque Mendoza ne se découragea pas, soutenu qu'il était par la reine, Veuve de Charles II. Froilan Diaz resta son prison nier, non plus dans Murcie, maisdans le couvent d'atocha où il était étroitement gardé. En vain Philippe V, quand il fut arrivé à Madrid, relégua - t - ii dans son diocèse l'arche vêque inquisiteur général; grâce aux nouvelles complica tions qua fit toujours naître le prélat acharné et tenace.
