Instead, she presents a complex and fluid world in which an array of gender roles and sexualities were possible and visible but that were shaped by the social, political, and environmental circumstances of the time. Through close readings of literary and historical sources, the author reveals a world where women had more legal and personal autonomy than has been traditionally assumed and where men were expected to fulfill gender roles that were often contradictory and stressful. She suggests that masculinity was as performative as femininity and argues for a reevaluation of the relationship between gender and power in pre-Conquest England.
