Excerpt from A Study of Some Factors Which Influence the Activity of Esterases

Hanriot(l) a French investigator was responsible for much of the earlier work on lipases. He studied in particular the lipase found in blood serum, and also those of the pancreas, the suprarenals, the muscles and testicles. He observed on dialysis of solutions containing lipases that none of the active substances was carried through the membrane. A small amount of the active substance hydrolyzed a large quantity of an ester, indicating that it was catalytic in nature. Henriot made use of monobutyric as a substrate, since it was somewhat soluble and easier to work with than fats. The point of chief interest in this review of Hanriot's work was, that his study of the relative hydrolysis of the ethyl esters of formic, acetic, propionic, isobutyric and pelargonic acids by serum lipase showed that with increased mol ecular weight of the acid, there was a decreased hydrolysis by lipase.
