Of the various properties which determine the uses of com pounds in a chemical way, solubility is of first importance. There fore, solubility data are perhaps of even greater interest from a practical than from a theoretical point of view. For this reason it has been necessary to consider the needs of those who require such information only incidentally and may, therefore, be less familiar with some of the forms used for its expression. With this in mind, and at the suggestion of users of the preceding edition, chapters have been prepared in which are described, among other things, the sources of solubility data, the methods of calculating them to desired terms, the interpretation of their tabular arrange ment, as well as some of the methods used for the accurate deter mination of solubilities.
