Inhaltsangabe

In this book, for the first time, the impact of George Sand on Victorian England and nineteenth century writers is fully assessed. In the course of her researches, Dr. Thomson has rediscovered many truths which have been largely forgotten in this century and sees George Sand as bridging the gap between the earlier nineteenth-century fiction of Scott and Jane Austen and that of the Brontes and George Eliot, with her treatment of passion as a major theme in the novel; she argues that for too long the predominantly English critical tradition has made the Victorian writers seem more insular, less literary than they were. "George Sandism" was an important Victorian phenomenon, social as well as literary, which should be taken into account in any discussion of the age. Indexed.
