South East Asia examines the national, regional and global contexts of development in South East Asia. It takes as its central theme the extent to which the varied roles, and wildly differing successes, of the region's states in promoting national development are a reflection of the degree to which each state has involved itself in regional structures, internationalisation of production and globalisation.
Key issues addressed include:
·the components of national economic success between 1970 and 1996
·the nature and long-term impact of the 1997 crisis
·the development of extended metropolitan regions and regional urban networks
·the dark side of the region's development: marginalisation, exclusion, civil unrest and damage to the environment
·the region's prospects for the future in the aftermath of the 1997 crises, as it faces a declining competitive advantage in labour-intensive manufacturing and a corresponding decline in foreign investment, the rise of China as a major economic threat, the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the war on terror.
Chris Dixon is Professor of International Development at London Metropolitan University. He has worked and published extensively on development issues in South East Asia.
