Edition / Printing Notes First edition, first printing; Ballantine Books, New York, February 1973; Ballantine #03086; ISBN 0-345-03086-9; 215 pages; $1.25 cover price; cover art by Dean Ellis; paperback original. Third book in the Venturer Twelve series, which comprises: A Thunder of Stars (1968), Seed of Stars (1972), The Neutral Stars (1973), and Where No Stars Guide (1975, by Kippax alone). "John Kippax" (1915-1974) was the pen name of English science fiction writer John Charles Hynam, who was killed in a car accident in 1974, bringing the Venturer Twelve series to a premature end; his co-author Dan Morgan wrote a fourth volume, Where No Stars Guide, to complete the series. A Pan Books UK reprint appeared in 1975; this Ballantine first printing is the true first edition in any format. United Earth Government couldn't get past the vast appropriations needed to commandeer an entire planet ? necessary to experiment with the titanic forces that would be unleashed while doing research on a warp drive. Meanwhile, Venturer Twelve and her sister ships continued to protect Earth Sector as best they could, knowing aliens must already have the drive. But their worst enemy was right here on Earth. The third entry in the Venturer Twelve series ? one of British science fiction's most underrated space opera series ? finds Dan Morgan and John Kippax at the height of their partnership, blending hard SF speculation with taut interstellar adventure. Tragically, Kippax was killed in a car accident in 1974, just a year after this book's publication, ending one of science fiction's most productive collaborations. The Ballantine first printings of the Venturer Twelve series, with the iconic Dean Ellis cover art, are the definitive editions and increasingly difficult to find in clean condition.
