The last-named work contained a request that the new American formula suggested in it should be tested by applica tion to European channels with steep slopes. The result of our investigations in response to this request was published in Kutter's Kurzer Bericht, and consisted in the demonstra tion of the inapplicability Of the new American formula to Channels with great descent.

In studying the subject we made continual use Of the gra phie method, and were eventually led to the recognition Of the elements-affecting the ﬂow of water, and thus to the develop ment Of our general formula.
