Excerpt from Macaulay: A Lecture Delivered at Cambridge on August 10, 1900 in Connexion With the Summer Meeting of University Extension Students

The historian's father, Zachary Macaulay, was a son of the manse, a Presbyterian who inherited much of the stern spirit of the Scottish Covenanters, a man who, as manager of an estate in lamaica, had seen for himself the miseries of the negroes, and who was afterwards associated with Wilberforce and Henry Thornton in stead.
