Excerpt from Recollections and Reflections: An Auto of Half a Century and More
Apropos of books of a reminiscent character, it is a crude Opinion of m1ne that only two classes are entitled to write them, namely, those who have made history themselves, or those who have been brought in close contact and acquaint ance with the class who have. Of right to write by rule pre scribed, I make no claim, and abjure all pretension on basis number one. On that of number two, I think I may, with out incurring the suspicion of vanity or arrogance, jot down some few of many reminiscences connected with illustrious personages, for it was my proud privilege to be brought in close touch with many of them.
