Such, briefly, was the Hebrew custom with the goat. It is interesting in this connection, however, to note that in cases of cleansing from leprosy a similar practice was followed with birds. If the leprous spots had disappeared from the patient,1 the priest took two birds, one of which was killed and its blood allowed to flow into a vessel over running water. The blood of the dead bird was then sprinkled over the patient. The living bird, after being dipped in the blood and thus infected with the curse, was permitted to fly away into the open field (cf. Lev. Xiv. 9.
