Other workers in the Douglas-fir region have explored the influence Of logging and slash burning on soils, using somewhat different approaches to the problem. Recently, Tarrant studied the effect of slash burning on rate of water percolation, Size of pore spaces, and bulk density of soils in two separate He found that severe burning lowers the rate of moisture movement, while light burning does not seriously alter the soil in this respect. He showed further that severe burning occurred on less than 5 percent of the total logged and burned area included in his study.
