After the gods' displeasure is revealed, suspicion falls on the newly anointed King Oedipus, who learns from the high priest that Laius was slain at a crossroadsâ"the very spot where Oedipus, years prior, had killed a man. When questioned by the chorus about the events leading to the previous kingâs death, Oedipus proudly recounts how he killed a man who had attempted to drive him from the road by force at a crossroads many years ago. The chorus expresses its horror, and Oedipusâ"now realizing he is the murdererâ"recounts additional horrific revelations: his marriage to Laius' widow and the fulfillment of an oracle that he would murder his father and marry his mother. In a fit of despair, Oedipus blinds himself and requests banishment from the city.
