Encouragé parla maison Ernest Leroux, toujours prompte à s'intéresser aux études reli gieuses, il s'est mis au travail, cherchant moins à être original qu'à être exact et clair, soucieux avant tout d'exposer les résultats les plus sûre ment acquis ou, en cas d'incertitude, l'état actuel des débats. Pour dresser par lui - même un pareil bilan des recherches sur la formation de l'an01en Testament, le lecteur aurait eu a dépouiller quan: tité de monographies, écrites pour la plupart en langues étrangères: M. Fargues les. A lues\pour lui et a su en condenser, en quelques lignes, les conclusions essentielles. Son livre ne prétend pas, du reste, remplacer les ouvrages plus spéciaux ou plus étendus; il ne veut, en particulier, nulle ment faire concurrence a l'excellente Introduc tion l'ancien Testament de M. Le professeur Lucien Gautier, écrite aussi pour le grand public mais beaucoup plus détaillée. M. Fargues espère.
