Excerpt from Infiltration and Permeability of Weathered Crystalline Rocks, Georgia Nuclear Laboratory, Dawson County, Georgia

The ground-water velocity in the area, based on chloride and nitrate tracer tests, ranged from about feet per day to as much as 25 feet per day. Ground water velocities determined from the permeability and porosity of the material, and the hydraulic gradients in'the area, ranged from about foot to 3 feet per day.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the geology and hydrology of the Radiation Effects Laboratory (REL) area and the Georgia Nuclear Laboratory (GNL). The study was conducted by the Geological Survey in cooperation with the United States Air Force and the United States Atomic Energy Commission and is a continuation of work begun in 1956. The author, J. W. Stewart describes the in-depth study of the hydrology and geology of the REL site, which included 67 wells being augered at the REL, REF, and SWD sites. The book also outlines the four infiltration tests of the REL disposal pit which were completed by maintaining heads of 1 to 3 feet of water in the pit for periods of up to 54 weeks. The infiltration rate through the weathered material was determined by discharging water into the disposal pit and maintaining heads of 1 to 3 feet in the pit for the duration of the test. The study's results provide a valuable contribution to understanding the movement and storage of groundwater in the area, with the infiltration tests indicating that most of the water from the pit moves along the strike of the schistosity, and some moves downdip and updip.
