Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the history of the Swiss city of Basel, from its Roman origins through the Middle Ages. The narrative begins with the earliest signs of human settlement near the bend in the Rhine River. The author highlights the city's strategic location and the role it played in trade and commerce. Through the centuries, Basel emerged as a vital hub, welcoming merchants, scholars, and pilgrims from all over Europe. The author delves into the medieval period, focusing on the rise of the city's bishopric and the emergence of a distinct urban identity. The book examines the tensions between the bishop's authority and the growing autonomy of the city's inhabitants. Additionally, it explores the cultural and religious life of Basel, including the founding of monasteries, the growth of guilds, and the rise of the University of Basel. The book concludes by discussing the significance of Basel as a center of learning and a hub of religious and political significance. Drawing on extensive archival research, the author provides a detailed and engaging account of Basel's evolution from a Roman settlement to a thriving medieval metropolis. This book offers a valuable contribution to the understanding of urban and religious history in Switzerland and Europe.
