Quod ex hand p'aucis, qui Tibulli nomen ferunt, libris manu scriptis_ nullus medium superat saeculum quartum deci mum, vix duo ante initium quinti decimi sunt orti, amicis elegiacae, quae voeatur, Romanorum poèseos valde dolendum est. Non efficitur quidem omnino sola antiquitate auctoritas, sed illa tempora sacculi quarti et praecipue quinti decimi tradendae fideliter orationi scriptoris Latini minus oppor tuna fuerunt; utique poetam cultissimum et moribus eorum temporum aptissimum integrum reddituros fuisse illius ae tatis homines non est sperandum, praesertim cum accedat, quod codices Tibulli plerique ex Italia oriundi sunt, ubi.
