Excerpt from La Guerra e le Classi Rurali Italiane<br/><br/>Nell'autunno del 1914, essendo lo studio scientifico delle con seguenze della guerra sulla vita moderna, passato subitamente dal campo della teoria a quello della storia, la Sezione di Eco nomia e di Storia della Fondazione Carnegie per la Pace Inter onale si propose di adattare il programma delle sue ricerche ai nuovi problemi che la guerra andava suscitando, ed a quelli che andava trasformando. Il programma in corso, la cui prepa razione Cra stata il risultato di una conferenza di economisti tenuta a Berna nel 1911 e che si occupava dei fatti che erano allora di attualità , aveva appena cominciato a mostrare di qual valore fossero isuoi contributi; ma, per varie ragioni, esso non potette più essere proseguito e sviluppato. Su richiesta del Di rettore della Sezione, fu quindi redatto un piano, il cui scopo era di cercar di misurare, per mezzo di una indagine storica, il costo economico della guerra e il perturbamento che essa cagionava nei processi dell' incivilimento. Si pensava che una siffatta Storia economica e sociale della guerra mondiale qua lora fosse intrapresa da uomini di temperamento equanime e di adeguata cultura, conscii degli obblighi scientifici di una tale opera verso la Verità , avrebbe potuto fornire elementi per la formazione di una sana Opinione pubblica, e cosi contribuire in maniera fondamentale agli scopi di una istituzione dedicata alla causa della pace interonale.
