Excerpt from An Oral System Of Teaching Living Languages<br/><br/>Now if there were a process through which the acquisition of a foreign language can be rendered easy, safe, and certain, it must be the process which nature follows in teaching us our mother tongue; for it cannot be doubted that she adopts the best means to attain her ends. This is a truth which, I apprehend, will be con tested by few nay, it has been so universally admitted, that almost all teachers have professed to take nature for' their model.2 But how have they put their pro fessions into practice? This question I Will undertake to answer. I will presently show, in as detailed a manner as the limits of a prefatory address Will allow, that the divers systems, heretofore resorted to, are erroneous and totally at variance with the nature of the human intellect, with the constitution of human language, and with the respective relations which subsist between them.
