The author argues that the starting point of any certain knowledge is consciousness, which has its own well-defined domain. These two elements are found in varying proportions in all conscious experience, allowing us to conceive of them as positive facts. The author maintains that the active element is more prominent in certain sense exercises and related intellectual operations, while the passive element is more prominent in other senses.
