Wer gegenwärtig eine neutestamentliche Einleitung in die Öffent lichkeit zu geben im Begriff ist, wird die Bedürfnisfrage überdenken müssen. Denn wir besitzen schon eine ansehnliche Zahl derartiger Bücher. Den noch nicht veralteten katholischen Werken von Reith mayr, Ad. Maier, Haneberg, Langen haben sich die von Kaulen, Cornely, aberle-schanz, neuestens die von Trenkle und A. Schäfer angereiht. Nun pflegte freilich mein unvergelélicher Lehrer und väter licher Freund, der hochselige Bischof von Linsenmann, zu sagen: Ein gutes Buch hat immer noch Platz; allein ein Urteil über den Wert eines Buches zu fällen steht erst den Lesern zu. Mich hat nicht das Bestreben, die Arbeiten meiner Vorgänger auf dem Gebiete der Neutestamentlichen Einleitung zu überbieten, nicht das Bewußtsein, eine jene Bücher weit überragende Leistung aufweisen zu können, zurherausgabe meines Manuskriptes veranlaiät, sondern die Über zeugung, daß. Den bisherigen Einleitungswerken trotz ihrer relativen Vorzüge doch etwas fehlt, was wir gerade in unsern Verhältnissen nicht entbehren können. Uber dieses „etwas will ich mich nicht des weiteren aussprechen. Der aufmerksame Leser wird selbst darüber Klarheit gewinnen und dann vielleicht mein Unternehmen billigen.
