And throughout Deviant Behavior, the author emphasizes that, to the sociologist, the term "deviant" is completely non-pejorative; no implication of inferiority or inherent stigma is implied; what the author emphasizes is that specific members of the society—social circles or collectivities—define and treat certain parties in a derogatory fashion; the sociologist does not share in this stigmatizing process but observes and describes it.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Erich Goode is Sociology Professor Emeritus at Stony Brook University. He has taught at a half-dozen universities and is the author of twelve books, including The Taming of New York’s Washington Square and Drugs in American Society. Goode has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and several teaching awards. He lives in New York City, which provides ample strategic research sites for his interests.
