Each hexagram and each line have a symbolic meaning that the text is there to describe. The question is, why does a hexagram or line mean what the text says it does? Traditional explanations often seem forced. This translation presents new explanations based on simpler and more coherent patterns of symbolism. While they do not explain everything, they make up a framework within which the inner logic of the hexagrams becomes apparent. . . . Hopefully, this is a version that will bring the modern Western reader closer to the original Changes than he or she has yet been able to go. The Chinese I Ching~or Book of Changes~is one of the oldest books in existence, written almost three thousand years ago during China's Bronze Age. Its traditional interpretation, however, was not laid down until several centuries later. By then, not only had the I Ching's archaic language and style become difficult to understand, but Chinese theorists had also grown much more sophisticated. As a result, the great commentators interpreted the text in terms of their own ways of thought, transforming it from a simple divination handbook into the philosophical work of moral and metaphysical truths that we know today. Now, after years of study and research, Greg Whincup has uncovered the original Book of Changes and here presents the first contemporary translation to incorporate the findings of modern scholarship in China and the West. Fascinatingly, what Whincup has found in exploring the Changes' sixty~four hexagrams is not an abstruse meditation, but a very pragmatic work. It tells the story of the rise to power of a feudal lord and is an instructional manual to guide ambitious noblemen in dealing with concrete situations in their lives.
