Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. 275 pages. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's quarter red cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. A Chicago police detective, perilously close to breakdown himself, must track down a crazed newspaper reporter who's taken to executing Mafiosi without a warrant. Police Lieutenant James Dela doesn't get much rest. A compulsive worker who sticks his nose into everything, Dela is also a compulsive walker who pounds out the miles on Chicago sidewalks, patrolling the city instead of sleeping. But Dela's just a harmless neurotic compared to fellow Chicagoan Vince Benedetto. When Benedetto was a lad, his pre-vatican II grandma, a religious maniac whose likes we are unlikely to see again, used to lock him in closets until he would confess to his basic corruption. As a result, he's rather badly scarred. Unable to be a normal husband, let alone a modern helpmate to his long-suffering wife, unsuitable as a father to his devoted son, unable to break out of suburban newspapers and unwanted by the Chicago dailies, Benedetto cracks. He decides to wipe out the corruption of organized crime in the city, something sure to please Grandma in Heaven. And one by one he starts to pick off the bosses. The public, goaded by the megalomaniac newspaper columnist whom Benedetto idolizes, is thrilled. Even the cops have mixed feelings. But Benedetto goes too far, strangling the secretary he lusts after and terrorizing his family, and Lt. Dela drops everything to track him down. Condition: Jacket corners and spine ends lightly rubbed else a very good to fine copy in like jacket. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers BOOKS003453

Fine in near fine dust jacket, has small teat to front right hand corner, small tear at rear, lightly worn. "The author of Shadow of the Beast and other novels has created a frightening portrait of madness. Vince Benedetto is a 33-year-old reporter for a suburban Chicago newspaper. For years he's been planning a major expose of the Mob his father is loosely "connected" but never gets around to it. His ineffectiveness turns into self-disgust and his delusions (he sees his wife as a predatory bird) become stronger. After an embarrassing scene with his father, Vince decides he'll "cleanse" the Mafia. He shotguns a capo and sends a note to a Chicago columnist: "Organized Crime is Dying." Then Vince kills again, sending another note. The columnist makes the "Gangster Killer" a hero. Vince's mind deteriorates further and he turns on his wife and son. But close on his trail is tough, intuitive detective Jim Dela, out to get the crazy killer who's "gone Hollywood." Screenwriter DiPego's short, cinematic scenes have pace and crackle. His greatest achievement, however, is the terrifying plausibility of Vince, even as he sinks to praying to his crazy dead grandmother and his shotgun, the "Holy Instrument." A couple of scenes should be read with all the lights on." -- PW. Book. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 014934
