Rezensionen

Gr 1-6 Children who love animal books such as Koko's Kitten (Scholastic, 1985) by Francine Patterson will take to this photo essay of similar size and reading, about the first two young Rothschild giraffe that the author and her late husband raised on the grounds of their home in Kenya. Asked to take in a baby giraffe of the 130 left of this white-legged species, they became so fond of the gentle, six-foot Daisywho took over their garden and their livesthat their concerns extended to the plight of all giraffe. ``Giraffe Manor'' is now headquarters of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) and an education center for visiting school children and tourists. Written with the same verve as their adult titles, and with simplicity, the account will hold children's interest, as will the multitude of beautiful color photos featuring Daisy and little ``brother'' Marlon: in an E.T.-like baby portrait; devouring nasturtiums; sitting folded on the lawn amid warthogs; and a literal tailpiece, a rear-view of (now adult) Daisy, squeezed up to her shoulders in the house doorway. Leslie-Melville and her late husband Jock unintentionally became the primary preservers of the endangered Rothschild giraffe while living in Nairobi, Kenya. In a candid and informal narrative accompanied by large, often full-page color photographs, the author recreates dramatic moments of their life with Daisy, a young giraffe. Daisy's adjustment to the Leslie-Melville estate is difficult until she imprints on Jock as her foster "mother." Surprisingly, her need for love and attention parallels that of a young child. She even exhibits sibling rivalry when a second giraffe joins the family. Melville provides an unusual look into the world of the giraffe, an animal that at first appears aloof and indifferent, but in reality is quite loving. More importantly, Daisy Rothschild eloquently points out the difference that just two people can make in the fight to protect endangered animals. Ages 5-up.
