His published works include Richard Wagner: New Light on a Musical Life, Richard Wagner and the Modern British Novel, Puccini the Thinker, and A Search for a Postmodern Theater: Interviews with Contemporary Playwrights. He received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
