Few algebraic prerequisites are presumed beyond a basic course in linear algebra.

Karen E. Smith is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan, and a frequent visitor to Finland. Lauri Kahanpää and Pekka Kekäläinen are both mathematicians working in Finland and attended Smith's lectures on algebraic geometry there. William Traves is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
