Experimental elements include an intestinal parasite that develops its own narrative voice and appears through unusual typography within Robertson's narration. The dark satire and transgressive approach distinguish the novel from conventional police procedurals. A 2013 film adaptation starring James McAvoy brought the story to a wider audience.
