Buchbeschreibung Soft cover. Zustand: New. First Edition, First Thus. Text/NEW, showing faint margin discoloration. Softcover/NF w/trace shelfwear. English translation of pre-eminent evolution & analysis of the concept of "childhood" both linguistically & socio-economically in the family structure by French medievalist & historian Philippe Ariès (1914 ? 1984). This is the 1962 English translation of L'Enfant et la Vie Familiale sous l'Ancien Régime first published in 1960. An early sociological study of the family & childhood. Central thesis is that attitudes towards children evolved over time in response to societal socio-economic changes. When agriculture was dominant, more children the better --- a 5-year old could feed chickens & close pigs into pens. But by the 17th century reliance on child labor diminished & childhood ended when they could live independently, ending multi-generational family units. Now days, at best, in the US we but carry "children" on medical insurance benefits through the age of 26. 447 pgs, 15 chapters in 3 parts: I, The Idea of Childhood; II, Scholastic Life; and III, The Family, followed by Conclusion. Buchbeschreibung Softcover. Zustand: New. The theme of this extraordinary book is the evolution of the modern conception of family life and the modern image; of the nature of children. Aries traces the evolution of the concept of childhood from the end of the Middle Ages, when the child was regarded as a small adult, to the present child-centered society, by means of diaries, paintings, games, and school curricula.Ironically, he finds that individualism, far from triumphing in our time, has been held in check by the family, and that the increasing power of the tightly-knit family circle has flourished at the expense of the rich-textured communal society of earlier times. Translated from the French by Robert Baldick. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers DADAX0394702867
