Grade 3 Up This clear and flowing translation of Genesis, Exodus, and portions of Numbers and Deuteronomy is more than a Bible story collection but not quite a new Bible version, because substantial sections of the text have been eliminated for the sake of narrative clarity and emphasis. Some of the poetic imagery is lost, along with important information; but these sacrifices help to sustain an enthralling forward pace. The rich and colorful panorama of Bible personalitiesAdam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Mosesremains. The scripture is carefully rendered throughout, gracefully modernized without losing melody and dignity and faithful in meaning. No material has been added or changed. Baskin enhances the narrative excitement with big, bold black-and-white illustrations. These sophisticated pen-and-ink drawings show simplified forms given vigor and impact by unusual balance and rhythm accentuated by sharp contrast. An excellent outline, giving chapter and verse for each story segment, is included at the end. Altogether, the harmony of material, writing style, artwork, and format is outstanding.
