Rezensionen

Grade 6-8 The remarkable beauty of the many rare and exotic moths and butterflies portrayed here will appeal to naturalists of all ages. This well-organized, profusely illustrated introduction/survey briefly explains the differences between butterflies and moths; compares them to other orders of insects; discusses their life cycles; describes some of the physical or behavioral characteristics of over 200 world species; examines endangered species, migration, hibernation patterns and defense mechanisms; and offers tips on observing the insects in the field and rearing them at home. The brief text in each short chapter is surrounded by a dozen or more clear color photographs of a variety of moths and butterflies and caterpillars and pupae against a clean white background. Extended captions in small print appear under each photo and identify the animal portrayed by common as well as by scientific name, cite its geographical range, and supplement the text with bits of additional information. The text is succinctly written and thorough. The book's numerous color photos are excellent; however, the small print used in the captions may discourage some readers. Jourdan's Butterflies and Moths Around the World (Lerner, 1981) provides more in-depth information on about 50 different species; however, Whalley's book describes the characteristics of about four times as many butterflies and moths, making it a useful addition to natural history collections.
