This successful introduction to sedimentary structures has been thoroughly revised. Retaining the field- and laboratory-orientated approach of the first edition, the authors have rewritten considerable sections on the properties of fluids and flows, sands and sandstones, gravels and conglomerates, structures of chemical and biological origin, and deformation structures. These revisions take account of advances in experimental work and of a deeper appreciation and aeolian, shallow marine, volcaniclastic, carbonate and mass-flow processes which has often resulted from studies of the ancient rock record. As in the first edition, there is an engaging emphasis on the methodology and processes whereby scientific understanding is achieved.
