What basic ethical principles should architects, planners and builders seek to uphold in their work?

Most of us living in modern societies spend nearly all our time in highly organised built environments. The structure and quality of our built environments is a significant determinant of our well-being. However, their effects are also far more widespread than this. Built environments impose massive resource demands upon the planet and generate massive amounts of waste. For this reason, the fate of the 'green bits' of the environment is now inextricably tied up with, and effectively at the mercy of, the future of the 'brown bits'. Written by a selection of international contributors, this book considers the ethical issues that are raised by the relationship between the built and the natural environment, and addresses questions about the way in which we ought to build. Topics addressed include cities, global warming, building and sustainability, participatory design, and the ethics of architecture.

Suitable for the student and professional alike, Ethics and the Built Environment establishes an agenda for the future development of these issues and offers answers to questions arising when we contemplate the ethics of building.
