The experiments demonstrate that when learners are offered motivated, meaning-based explanations for these structures - showing, for instance, how the spatial logic underlying prepositions extends into their more abstract uses - comprehension and retention improve measurably. A thorough review of existing research in the field contextualises these findings, and a closing chapter on future directions includes an innovative analysis of English conditionals.
