Rapid advances in materials science and engineering are being made in the field of fibre-reinforced cement composites for use in construction. This book presents the proceedings of a high level workshop in Mainz, Germany in June 1991, attended by the key international experts in the subject, from the USA, Canada, Europe, Israel and Japan. The workshop was under the auspices of RILEM (the International Union of Testing and Research Laboratories for Materials and Structures) and sponsored by the US National Science Foundation, the DRG (German Research Community) and the American Concrete Institute. The materials being developed using new matrices and fibres, and employing sophisticated manufacturing techniques are being applied both in conventional civil engineering and construction and in more demanding applications. The use of material science approaches is deepening understanding of their behaviour. This book will be particularly valuable for those involved in research and development of these composites, and their use in conventional and novel applications.
