Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Paperback Edition. Paperback. Drawin on data from rural communities both within and outside Europe, the contributors to this volume examine the character and significance on non-wage forms of labour. Two central themes are explored. First, the question of the 'survival; of non-wage labour and 'traditional' patterns of family and household organization in situations where local economic units are, directly or indirectly, dependent upon commodity markets. Second, the changing nature and social evaluation of women's work, both within the household and wider community, in contrasting rural settings. These themes are examined through a number of case-studies voering both industrialized Europe and the less developed countries. The first part of the book deals with the nature and functioning of peasant households in three Third World contexts: an Egyptian smallder village, an Argentinian rural estate, and a highland community in Peru. The second deals with continuities and changes in the family farm in two Finnish rual areas and in Poland: and the final part focuses upon the division of labout and the status of women's work in rural southwest England, Iceland, and an Israeli kibbutz. The introductory chapter provides an overview of analytical perspectives on agrarian change, and non-wage labour, and indicates the broader theoretical implications of the case studies. This volume will be especially useful for students and scholars working in the fields of rural sociology, economic anthropology, women's studies, and development studies. It will also be of interest to all those concerned with the changing nature of rural life and its impact on the lives of household memebers, especially women. 222 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
