D'un autre côté, un vocabulaire uniquement rédigé en transcription latine présente encore de plus graves inconvénients. Jamais il ne pourra servir pour un texte écrit par des indigènes qui, quoiqu'on fasse, n'abandonnemnt pas l'usage des caractères orientaux. De plus, il ne pourrait être consacré qu'à un seul dialecte, et là encore, les incertitudes causées par les voyelles sourdes, aussi fréquentes en kabyle qu'en arabe vulgaire, ne per mettent pas de noter toutes les variantes et d'adopter un classement alphabétique Dans son Lybz'an Vaca bulaey, M. Newman a essayé de tourner cette diffi culté en classant les mots transcrits en caractères latins, par ordre de racines. Mais pour les lettres qui manquent en anglais, il a adopté un mode de transcription auquel je n'hésite pas à préférer les caractères arabes. On verra en tête du lexique comment, partant d'une idée analogue, j'ai tenté de parer aux divers inconvénients que je viens d'énumérer, sans oublier qu'il est surtout destiné aux commençants.
