Excerpt from Notes on Some Cretaceous Fossils Collected During Captain Palliser's Explorations in British North America in 1857-1860 on Some Fossils From the Nanaimo Group of the Vancouver Cretaceous: Note on the Occurrence of Primnoa Reseda on the Coast of British Columbia
Mr. Etheridge, naturally and very properly, tried to identify the Cre taccone fossils collected by Sir James Hector, with those species which they most nearly resemble in one or other of these publications. An analysis of his published lists shows that as many as nineteen of these fossils are determined specifically, via, eleven from Manitoba and the Northwest Territories, and eight additional species from Vancouver Island, but it must also be borne in mind that, of these nineteen, four belong to the genus Ostrea and five to Inoceramus, both of which are gen era ih which the species are unusually difficult to discriminate. No less than seven of the species from Manitoba or the Northwest Territories, and seven others from Vancouver Island are referred by Mr. Etheridge to Texan species described and figured by Roemer or Conrad.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book concerns a comprehensive review of the fossils discovered by Hector's expeditions within the Canadian territories. The author provides a summary of what is currently known about western Canada's Cretaceous system, with special focus on fossil flora and fauna. It also includes a provisional list of fossils collected by Sir James Hector from various sites. Of special interest are the previously undescribed species from the Vancouver Cretaceous, including an ammonite new to North American researchers. The author also includes a thorough examination of fossil collections from the same region, assembled in the years following the initial expeditions and deposited in the Provincial Museum at Victoria. Specifically, it includes descriptions of new decapod crustacean species. These descriptions, and the revised nomenclature of previously reported fossils from this area, contribute significantly to the understanding of the faunal and floral composition of the region during the Cretaceous period.
