Excerpt from Second Year in German
The present volume is a continuation of the First Year in German. The favorable reception accorded to the latter has encouraged the author to continue in this volume the general plan of its predecessor. The fact that the Second Year is intended for more advanced students necessitated some changes, which, however, are of slight importance.
The Reading Matter in most of the Lessons of this volume is longer than in the first book. This was made possible without burdening the student with too large a number of new words in each Lesson, first by an extensive use of the vocabulary of the First Year in the present volume, and second by devoting much attention to a systematic treatment of the derivation and formation of words. As to the first, it naturally resulted in a considerable enlargement of the German English and english-german vocabulary at the end of the volume; but on the other hand it affords the decided advantage of a review of the previous year's wor.k As regards the second, it enables the student to acquire a knowledge of the relationship existing between words belonging to the same family, i. E., hav ing the same root. The more familiar the student becomes with this relationship of words, the less the necessity of memorizing words and their meaning.
