Dans l'une des salles réservées àla Belgique à l'exposition de 1900, une oeuvre de sculpture m'avait ému entre toutes les autres par son style large et noble et par son sentiment profond. C'était une figure de jeune homme, grande et pure. Le torse dénudé avait la chasteté suprême que l'art sait con ferer aux formes de la vie; les mains, d'un geste naturel, retenaient un livre ouvert; la téte excellemment sculptée comme le reste, de lignes très classiques, mais sans nulle froideur, exprimait avec une simpli cité admirable la méditation de l'homme qui vient de lire et dont l'esprit contemple encore quelque haute pensée.
