Excerpt from Practical Chemistry: The Principles of Qualitative Analysis
The second part is devoted to methods of Analysis. Here he is first instructed in the properties of a few of the constituents of common salts, and is taught methods for their separation or identification in presence of one another. If he goes no further than this he will at least have learnt what chemical analysis means. He afterwards proceeds to extend his knowledge, till at the end of the course he will be able to analyse any mixture of ordinary inorganic substances.
The analytical part is to a great extent shorn of directions for manipulation, as well as of details which are not relevant to the immediate object of the experiment. According to my experience these are not only of no use, but are a positive hindrance to the apprehension of the facts to be acquired. Manipulation can only be learnt properly under personal instruction by a competent teacher, and more will be accomplished by letting the beginner see once for all how a thing is to be done than by whole volumes of printed directions.
