Peu de textes classiques ont soulevé autant de discussions que les oeuvres italiennes de Pétrarque. La plus grave a porté sur l'authenticité de l'édition A1dine de 1501. Alde Manuce, aidé de Pietro Bembo, a donné, cette année-là, une édition du Canzoniere, d'après un manuscrit complet qui passait pour l'auto graphe même de l'auteur. Ce manuscrit n'a pas été retrouvé. Certains critiques en ont mis en doute l'existence et il en est, en ce moment même, qui rejettent absolument comme arbitraires les leçons aldines.
