Der geniale M h und „faust, Hamlet, Christus enthalten 1st. Besonders thes Beziehungen zur reinen Mystik Meister Eckeharts und Spinozas und die Ausschlag gebende Rolle, die diese reine ‚mystik bei der Entstehung von Goethes „faust ge spielt hat, dürften gerade in unserer Zeit mit ihrer Sehnsucht nach einer Vertiefung des religiösen Lebens die Teilnahme vieler er wecken. Während ich aber alles das, w'as sich auf Goethes „faust bezieht, in den wesentlichen Punkten nur eigenen Quel lenstudien und eigenem Nachfühlen und Nachdenken verdanke, habe ich vieles andere in diesen Ausführungen erst aus zweiter Hand genommen. Namentlich „goethes Leben von Heinrich Düntzer ist von mir an zahlreichen Stellen benutzt worden, an einigen wenigen auch das schöne Werk meines Freundes Albert Bielschowsky. In meiner Auffassung des „faust aber vermoch ten mir weder Düntzer, mit dem ich noch in Briefwechsel ge standen habe, noch Bielschowsky, mit dem ich auf Spazier gängen und daheim mich viel darüber unterhalten habe, zu folgen. Unbegreif lich bleibt mir, wie der feine Hermann Türck in dem Buch ‚der geniale Mensch' glauben konnte, die Sorge nehme von Faust Besitz, da diese sich vielmehr mit einem ärgerlichen Fluche von ihm abwendet.
