Osteopathic medicine has evolved several distinct variations on the theme of allowing spontaneous physiological release of hypertonic muscles including those in spasm. They also allow chronically tense tissues to relax and can therefore be used as part of integrated therapeutic interventions which employ other soft tissue and joint normalization procedures.
