Osteopathic medicine has evolved several distinct variations on the theme of allowing spontaneous physiological release of hypertonic muscles including those in spasm. The value and importance of these is in their gentleness, ease of application and potential for instant response in cases of acute spasm and pain. They also allow chronically tense tissues to relax and can therefore be used as part of integrated therapeutic interventions which employ other soft tissue and joint normalization procedures.
